Summary Report

METR's assessment finds Anthropic's models are likely improving about twice as fast as before late 2025, mostly because of AI in AI research.

  • 01. About 2x the earlier pace; METR would not be surprised by 1.3x to 3x
  • 02. Most of the speedup credited to AI in research; much evidence redacted
METR, an independent AI evaluation group, spent eleven weeks with Anthropic's internal data asking whether AI is speeding up AI development. Its answer is probably yes. METR estimates Anthropic's models are improving about twice as fast as before late 2025, and attributes most of that to AI being used in the research itself, with high uncertainty. Co-founder Sam McCandlish says many of the conclusions match his own. Anthropic redacted most of the evidence METR found most useful, and plans to publish its own analysis in the coming weeks.
