Anthropic's scientists gave one broad prompt: search a massive sequence database for interesting reverse transcriptases, the enzymes that copy RNA into DNA. About 950 Claude agents ran for 21 hours on two hundred and ten million tokens. They narrowed 200,000 candidates to 3,500 systems and then twenty, and one agent flagged a long array of evenly spaced DNA repeats beside an odd-looking enzyme. It looks like a CRISPR array. Anthropic calls it ART, array-associated reverse transcriptases, and its new Bay Area lab has confirmed the array is expressed as short RNAs. Nobody knows yet what it does, but every similar known system can cut, copy or paste DNA. Dario Amodei says it's work he'd have been proud of as a PhD student. But the discovery was all Claude's. OpenAI has given ChatGPT Voice three upgrades at once. It can now use plugins, so you can ask it out loud to check your calendar, send an email or catch up on Slack. It runs on any of the GPT-6 models, Astra, Sol or Luna. And it works inside ChatGPT Work on web and mobile, so talking can now produce documents, decks, spreadsheets and websites, or drive the browser through a task. It's rolling out globally today. There are more than 2,000 ready-made voices across a hundred languages, including regional accents like Quebec French and Scots English. You can direct delivery line by line and script back-and-forth conversations. Flash TTS takes first place on Hume AI's voice design benchmark and quality index, with Flash-Lite second. Output is watermarked with SynthID, and it's live in the Gemini API. Two numbers from this week show how fast things are moving. Epoch AI calculates that at any fixed level of performance, the cost of AI has fallen about 47 percent a quarter since 2023, roughly thirteen-fold a year. That's four times faster than DNA sequencing fell, six times faster than compute, and eighteen times faster than lithium batteries. Its example: in January 2025, o3 scored 75 percent on the GPQA science test at thirty cents a question, and eighteen months later GPT 5.6 Luna matched it for four hundredths of a cent. Meanwhile the gap between major model releases has shrunk from seventy-three days in 2023 to eighteen this year. Anduril has won the Autonomous Wildfire Response track of the XPRIZE. The challenge was to detect and fully suppress a high-risk fire within ten minutes of ignition, somewhere in a thousand square kilometres of terrain, without being fooled by decoy fires. The finals ran in the Alaskan wilderness in June. Anduril's Lattice software coordinated cameras, sensors and drones from detection through to suppression, with minimal human input. It took first place and 1.2 million dollars, plus a separate million-dollar bonus for detection accuracy. The defence company's autonomy stack has found a job everybody can get behind.
